I have a toddler and I’ve noticed how fixated most toddlers are on things that go: trucks, planes, trains, cars, diggers, etc. What kind of things were kids fixated on, or using for imaginary play, before the invention of the above? Was it just carriages and horses and means of transport (the closest equivalent to things that go)?
There was a very interesting post about this in /r/Askanthropology. Here is the link: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskAnthropology/comments/9y0weh/my_toddler_is_obsessed_with_trains_what_occupies/. One interesting example discusses the doodles of Onfim, a boy from the Novgorod Republic - a medieval East Slavic state in what is now modern Russia. Here's a link to that too http://www.goldschp.net/SIG/onfim/onfim.html. I highly recommend reading it, it's very short and really interesting.
