Why are most Major Australian cities located in the southeast of the country?

by Zimbo_Slice

It seems like it would’ve been beneficial for people to settle in the north due to the closer trade routes and its proximity to Asia.

Aussie here, Quite simply its because the southeast offers access to superior farming lands with decent rainfall, the latter critical in a country like Australia which is largely desert. Sydney and Melbourne are also located with excellent natural harbours, vital for import and export of supplies, and like the rainfall thing they offer opportunities within a largely hostile coast.
