A general rule of thumb is to remember that much of the pre-industrial world ran on a "subsistence economy" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subsistence_economy - which means that most people were in charge of making and maintaining everything they needed to use: tools, clothing, etc. The idea of department stores, general stores and clothing shops did not really take hold until factories could produce a lot of such goods during the Industrial Revolution, which is well into the 18th and 19th centuries.
