There's an entry in my old Roman house encyclopedia about a village in the middle ages being scared of the plague reaching they're door step, so they agreed to do a play of Jesus's living days every year. (worded that nicer, living days instead of final brutal days)... The plague didn't kill them, so I guess we've been historically reacting since knights were washing they're helmits
