Source recommendations on forestry history

by Gerefa

I have been trying to get more information specifically on coppice based woodland management. Outlets like mother earth news speak of it being prevalant "in medieval europe" but rarely offer more information on its history. I am also curious about english hedgelaying, espaliers and other methods of manipulating the growth of living trees and shrubs. Will read books, however dense. This is not strictly academic, I manage woodland and ultimately hope for practical insight.

I couldn't more highly recommend 'Woodlands' by Oliver Rackham. It focuses on British Woodlands, and covers a very large historical time span, delving into the sciences of pollen deposit analysis, dendrology, geology etc. when appropriate, without ever being too dense.

For context, I am an English graduate who now works in the UK forestry commission, so am not at all a scientist or forester, but I found it readable and engaging. It was recommended to me by an environmental consultant a year or so ago.
