Canadian forces landed at Juno Beach, between the British landings at Sword and Gold beaches, and were supported by elements of the Royal Marine Commandos and the British 79th Armoured Division. Like all of the D-Day landings, they fared much better than feared, but didn't complete all of their ultimate objectives.

The Canadian landings faced fairly stiff resistance but within two hours, and the arrival of the second wave, they had successfully secured their beachhead at Courselles, Bernieres-sur-Mere and Saint Aubin. Broadly speaking, Canadian units peformed well. Although they weren't able to capture Carpiquet airfield, they had reached its perimeter, and while stiff resistance had prevented the linking of the Juno beachhead with the British forces at Sword beach, they had successfully linked up with the British 50th Division beachhead at Gold Beach. These were in fact the only two beachheads to be linked actually on D-Day; it would take a further 6 days for all 5 beachheads to be linked. Canadian forces were also notable in advancing the furthest of any allied forces on D-Day itself.
