Cavalry on Cavalry Charges

by AncalagonthePartier

Hello,

I was curious if there were any documented cases of Heavy Cavalry charging into other Heavy Cavalry. When I do some research, it seems this topic has been covered well when it comes to horses charging into men, but not horses on horses. The only depiction I can find is of the US Civil War Cavalry engagement at Gettysburg, and from the details, it sounds like a lose/lose situation. You end up slamming into each other and dying immediately from the impact.

Because of this, were cavalry on cavalry charges not common because of the cost? However, that makes me wonder about jousting. Was jousting just a sport, or did it have real wartime practice where riding at an opponent on horseback and lancing them was seen as a crucial skill for battle?

u/hergrim made an interesting post about this recently. Synopsis, a hypothetical narrative of a knight about to participate in a charge.
