Were mothers as sad losing a baby a hundred years ago compared with today because it was so common to happen?

I remember a citation of Montaigne, it's a very bad traduction i used google trad : "i lost two or three children in nursing not without regrets but without miff". Death was a common thing but people were still sad, not as sad as us now though
