Is it based on the number of popes before them in a certain time frame or based on the number of identically named popes before them. For instance if I chose the name Pope Hilarious would I be Pope Hilarious II since there was one other pope named Hilarious or would I used another number?
They take a new name upon becoming pope and yes it’s based on the number of popes before that took that specific name so if you chose Pope hilarious you wouldn’t have a number or it’d be the first (I), and if let’s say seven popes down the road someone else thought hilarious was a good name he’d be pope hilarious II
