I think it's just as simple as the fact John Smith is often considered the most common name in the UK - though this article which makes use of the Open Register says today David Smith is the most popular.

Also the names 'John' and 'Smith' are quintessential working class names, so there's a particularly resonant 'everyman' quality to the name.
