Was the First World War truly a 'world war'?

by StAngerSnare

From a European standpoint when learning about the First World War we are taught about the European theater, specifically the Western Front. Therefore, other aspects such as the Middle East, and the conflict in the Balkans are viewed as side shows to essentially a war between Germany, Britain, France and later America. Even the Eastern Front is neglected. Similarly the causes of the conflict are so varying it appears that it was a series of wars between nations, E.G: Serbia and Austria-Hungary occurring at the same time connect by various treaties. Therfore, my question is, Was the First World War truly a 'world war'?

/u/elos_ wrote two fine answers about why the First World War was truly the first global conflict here and here.

See /u/HarryCochrane's different view, where they view the Seven Year's War as a world war [here] (https://old.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/a8okdo/wouldnt_the_7_years_war_be_the_first_world_war/ecfht1s/?st=jsy3d5tq&sh=87595e23).
