Why most countries in the Americas grant jus solis citizenship, compared to none in Europe and a combined 6 in Africa and the Asia-Pacific?

I was doing some reading on Wikipedia when I came across this infographic about jus solis vs jus sanguinis citizenship. Why does "birthright citizenship" seem to be an idea almost exclusive to the Americas? Why is there such a split in the philosophies of citizenship in those two continents compared to the rest of the world? It seems to be mostly in former New World colonies that these ideas exist, is it tied to that?

I don't have an answer for you, but there is a six year old thread on this with an answer in the meantime.

Hopefully someone can chime in with a more detailed and better sourced one here.
