Looking for good reads recommendations about historical cartography

by Last_Dov4hkiin

So, as the title says, I'm looking for good books about the history of maps, how to read them, understand them, why was mapped in 16 century made in that and that way etc. I tried to find by myself but I only came across general books about maps, nothing that seems really good from a historical perspective.

With other good recommendations already given, I can't recommend enough The History of Cartography series by The University of Chicago press which, in addition to being amazing and thorough, has first three volumes available for free online in pdf form and which I referenced a lot in my answers here.

I think the volumes published so far cover only the development of cartography from ancient times to end of the Renaissance, which means it doesn't yet go through more modern developments. But it gives a really good overview of the state of knowledge of also non-European cartographical practices which is refreshing and super interesting.

Overall, it's a really well written up-to-date scholarship of cartography, in form of free pdfs, that are easy to read standalone chapters where you can basically just read chapters you are interested in.

It may not be as historically-oriented as you're looking for-- it's been a while since I've read it, so I don't recall-- but I really enjoyed reading Off the Map: The Curious Histories of Place Names by Derek Nelson!

Hi. I have a couple of books on historical cartography that I love. I don't think they're exactly what you're looking for - that is, they aren't a "history of cartography" - but, depending on your interests, you may find them fascinating. Author Derek Hayes is a geographer with an interest in old maps. He has written several books on various themes, e.g. the mapping of the Arctic, which trace the development of maps of that region through time. In so doing, he discusses who made the maps, under what circumstances, the methods used, their (and their backers') motivations, and so on. Very engaging for map enthusiasts.
