In 1992 a number of foreigners, salafi volunteers, came to Bosnia and Herzegovina. They formed a unit called El-Mujahid, which was put under the command of the Bosnian Muslims' Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The estimation says that there were between 2.000 and 5.000 of them. They were joined by local Muslims as well. Most of them were expelled after the war, but some settled in Bosnia and Herzegovina permanently. A group of former members of El-Mujahid formed an organization called Active Islamic Youth (AIO) that worked for almost a decade. They also published a magazine called Saff. The AIO disbanded in 2006, due to lack of foreign funding.
