It was a passenger screw steamer. Originally built in 1907 in Malmö, Sweden for Sweden - Germany traffic and named Prinsessan Margareta. In 1909 the ship was sold to Finland Steamship Company and later resold to Russian Danube Steamship Company and got the name Grand Duke Alexander Mikhailovich. The vessel moved to the Black Sea and was used at the lane Galati - Odessa. In 1914 mobilized and used as a tender. The ship was captured by the Germans and ended up in Sevastopol. After the war she became Wrangel possession and was used as a civil vessel transporting refugees to Constantinople (mentioned in the "Memories: From Moscow to the Black Sea" by Teffi and "By the Long Road..." by Alexander Vertinsky).
