I am looking for an authoritative biography or even a reputable general history on the life and times of Võ Nguyên Giáp. From early searches, there's a real mix out there: a few books in French (without English translation), sensationalist accounts by hack writers, and one or two accounts written by himself like "How We Won the War", which by some accounts are merely ghost written propagandist flyers... So for a man who masterminded two compelling victories over two colonial powers, all within a lifetime, you would think there would be a lot more written about him.
I liked James A. Warren, Giap: The General Who Defeated America in Vietnam, Palgrave MacMillan, 2013. However, it isn't a general biography of Giap; it focuses on his military role. If you are after a military biography of Giap, it's an excellent book. If you want a personal biography, this won't have enough detail on his family, home life, education, etc. to satisfy. It's pretty much a non-propaganda well-done "How We Won the War" that actually covers how the war was won (unlike "How We Won the War").
Perhaps unsurprisingly, even though it isn't mentioned in many accounts of Giap and his battles, careful attention to logistics played a key roles in his successes. This is covered well by Warren.
The shortcomings of the book as a general and personal biography are noted in the current 3-star reviews of the book on Amazon, at length in the longer 3-star review.
