Book suggestions for the Hundred Years' War and the Wars of the Roses

by Divvel

I find this period of history extremely fascinating and I'd like to really delve into it. Which is why I'm not interested into cursory reading or intro summaries or anything like that. I'm interested in the extensive, broad, deep reading, and I'd like a book that provides as much detail as possible about this period and the greater context. It doesn't necessarily have to be dry and monotonous, I'd appreciate a "bigger picture" focused book as well, as long as it is detailed and academic.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I think for the Hundred Years' War, you want Jonathan Sumption's The Hundred Years War series--currently at four books and intending to be five, IIRC. (Maybe volume 5 has already been published?)

You should also check out David Green, The Hundred Years' War: A People's History, which is a great read and will fill in the parts that Sumption doesn't--namely, the human experience of the war, from all different points of view like prisoners of war, peasants, etc.

Have fun!
