Best Books on the Collapse of the Soviet Union / 1990s Russia?

by NotTheAnts

Hi,

Interested in getting recommendations of books that cover the collapse of the Soviet Union and life in 1990s Russia. Am less interested in historical accounts and more interested in narratives from the point of view of ordinary people that recount what it was like watching the economy collapse and supermarket shelves go empty. Ideally some accompanying narrative explaining what was happening at a political level would be interesting, but really keen to get the perspective of the average citizens.

Thanks!

"Secondhand Times: The last of the soviet" by Svetlana Alexcievich is a pretty good book.

It's a a collection of testimonies from different kind of former USSR citizens, talking about the collapse of the Soviet Union and their life throug and after it.

I read it in french so I cannot judge the quality of the english translation but it is well worth the read.
