The Protestant Reformation

by BigOleJimmy

After doing thorough research on Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation, I came across vague information regarding the Anabapist leader Jan Van Leyden and the Muenster Rebellion. I have found very little information on him outside of brief paragraphs here and there. As far as I know, the only substantial material on this subject is written in German. Does anyone know of any English sources pertaining to the rebellion or Jan Van Leyden?

You should start with:

  • Ralf Klöster, "The Melchiorites and Münster," in A Companion to Anabaptism and Spiritualism, ed. Roth and Stayer (2007), 217-256

There are a few other English works in its bibliography, but most of them don't really pertain to Münster itself (stuff like, its relations with the Netherlandish government; whether it counts as Anabaptist (yes); etc).

Unfortunately, I don't think any of the primary sources have been translated into English, except maybe excerpts in an anthology somewhere is always a possibility. Anabaptist scholarship is still oddly compartmentalized from mainstream Reformation studies, and only recently breaking out of its confessional (done by Mennonites and other Anabaptist descendant scholars) mode.
