How throughout the history is the Polish kingdom being portrayed?

by StoppedListeningToMe

As a Pole brought up in Poland I've been fed many favourable views. I know at the time of our prime we've assimilated neighbours etc. I just want to know how the outside history portrays my country.

(American here) my college advisor (modern Europe/eastern Europe specialist) used to refer to Poland as the “great disappearing country” because of how frequently it got conquered by neighboring countries from the 18th century onward. Post-World War II, Americans and especially American Catholics see it as one of the great harbingers of resistance against communism, but to be honest most Americans don’t know anything about the historic Polish kingdom... even my friends of Polish descent are probably only vaguely aware such a thing existed... but let’s not get into stereotypes of Polish-Americans. Someone from Sweden or Russia might have an interesting perspective!
