Well you see pretty much only a small force was left by Chiang Kai Shek as he saw there was no way he could defeat the Japanese. A small force was left in Nanjing but that didn’t do much as most the nationalist army had retreated. After the small garrison was defeated by the Imperial armies it was pretty much a massacre against unarmed civilians
