Historian viewpoint of the man “Jesus”

by dorksuckmepls

Out of curiosity and ignorance on the topic, I’m curious to hear what type of historical facts or storylines are accepted about the man. Not necessarily “the prophet” but what details about him are generally accepted as true among scholars and historians alike.

It should be noted from the outset since you allude to it that there are few sharp lines between "historians" and "academics who study the Bible". Experts in the history of religions tend to have degrees and/or tenured positions in e.g. "Religious studies", "Classics", Linguistics, and so forth. This varies with academic tradition, but most importantly, there is a lot of overlap in skillsets between these disciplines, in e.g. source criticism.

I would say the generally accepted facts are:

  • Jesus was a Galilean Jew, a simple craftsman (tekton) by profession.

  • He had a mother named Mary and a brother called James (Jacob), likely along with other siblings.

  • He was a disciple or follower of John the Baptist, and took up preaching himself in his 20's or so, in the apocalyptic tradition.

  • He had a core of disciples, "the Twelve".

  • He employed similes, metaphor and analogy extensively, and probably said "amen, amen" ("indeed, indeed") a lot.

  • He attracted large enough crowds to bother the local authorities in Jerusalem.

  • He was accused of trying to overthrow the Romans, and executed by Pontius Pilate.

On matters such as why exactly Jesus was arrested, Judas' betrayal, what his precise message was, where he travelled, etc, opinions diverge. The most lay-friendly introduction to the historical Jesus are Ehrman's Did Jesus Exist? and How Jesus Became God. He also has more scholarly works, like Jesus: Apocalyptic Prophet of the New Milennium. A wide variety of source-critical methods are used to establish these points of reference; if you wonder about any one claim or primary source in particular, let me know in a reply and I can elaborate.

While you wait for any new discussion, you may want to check out the FAQ, particularly the section about Christianity. This topic is pretty exhaustively covered.
