As i read more and more on body building, i started to wonder how was it like to go to gym in ancient times especially in greece (Olympics.)
A while ago I answered the question: How ripped did the Greeks get?
There were no bodybuilders as such. The most muscular men were the professional athletes, who bulked up in order to do better in wrestling or boxing matches. They mostly did this through constant exercise (mostly without tools) and by eating lots of meat. The lifestyle of these athletes was often the subject of criticism and mockery; they were often characterised as sluggish, indulgent, and as one poet put it, "slaves to their jaws." Their needy bodies made them useless as warriors. Their over-developed physique was not considered beautiful or ideal, and ordinary citizens did not aspire to it.
The ideal body honed at the gymnasion was much more modest, with a focus on agility and endurance more than strength or muscle mass.
Thank you for the answer!
