I'd assume mostly coastal, but was it more from Normandy and Brittany, or maybe from Aquitaine? Or am I wrong altogether and colonists were drawn from across France?
Most of French settlers originated from the western provinces of the kingdom :mainly Normandy, Saintonge and Aunis;but as well Brittany and Poitou (altough in lesser numbers). People from Paris and Ile-De-France represented furthermore an important part of colonial population, but at the contrary of the former, mostly women in the second half of the XVIIth century.
Decomposing a bit by geography would give something along this for the period between 1608 and 1679
Poitou-Aunis-Saintonge-Angoumois : 28,2%
Normandy-Alençon : 23,0%
Paris and Ile-de-France : 18%
Anjou-Maine-Orléanais-Touraine : 8,5%
Picardie-Artois-Flandres : 2,8%
Brittany : 2,5%
Other provincial origins are generally lumped together (in additionof a significant 7% of settlers of unknown origin) with eastern, southern and cetral provincials representing respectivly 3.6, 3.4 and 1.8% of the settlers
