Cults were originally about worshipping a particular god or group of gods at a particular place. The cult of Zeus Teleios (the marriage rite) and Zeus Ktesios (domestic or of the home) were very different. Cult did not have a negative association. Cult was from a Latin word meaning to cultivate (Cultus).

I don't know the oldest known cult, though.
