Question for clarification: What does "apolitical" and "compared to others" mean?
Generals have been presidents purely because of their military service. The armed forces have taken very strong voices on American political issues, especially recently. The military has been a frequent reflection on racial and sexual issues from the Colored Regiments of the World Wars to 'Don't ask don't tell' and how it affects gay service members. And, of course, the American military is super political in the way how it's the U.S. government's ultimate tool of foreign policy. They fought a civil war, they fought five declared wars and dozens of undeclared ones, and they have an absolutely huge influence on America's youth through their activism in schools and universities. And veteran issues and military spending continue to be hot button talking points in American society and politics.
I guess they never couped the government? You will have to give me the comparisons ("many others") you reference in the question.
