Some artefacts excavated from middle part of China, a small prehistoric site called ‘Banpo’, there’re many clay fragments marked with symbols of runes. I’m so curious about this phenomenon. Because I know there’re some local tribes still live in the beginning of of 20th century in Taiwan. They have the similar beliefs like Viking, they believe head hunting and killing would be a passport for ‘rainbow bridge’ that leads to the heaven. Only the braves who hunted his first head would be awarded the facial tattoo and then can be called ‘siding’(sounds like ‘Celtic’). Can anyone tell me what exactly is this culture and belief?
Here are the samples of those symbols: http://www.diogenesresearch.org/English/banpo.htm
First things first, Bampo site is part of a neolithic archeological horizon. A discernable Celtic culture, or rather a meta-culture of various Celtic cultures, simply didn't appeared yet. It would as identifying pottery in Roman Judea as typically "South Carolinian".
Celtic head-hunting isn't really that associated with religious beliefs. It is a largely attested custom (Celtiberians are said to have completed with hand-hunting) but seldom found within sanctuaries (altough they were at their entrance) and more in public non-religious spaces,in an heroic or domestic display. As far as it can be told, it was less magic or religion, than symbols and means of social ascencion in a culture favouring fighting deeds.
Bivrost is a Scandnavian rerefence, mentioned in the XIIIth century. Even by scrapping the barrel by mentioning Irish Lugh's rainbow as its weapon, it can't be associated with any Celt belief and critically not with head-hunting.
Last but non least, the linked site seems to run on pseudohistoric nonsense, as a variant over 1421's "discoveries" (AskHistorians have a really good FAQ on this) I never saw someone arguing runic script (appearing in the IInd century CE) had anything to do with Mycenean Greece (admitting this author meant Linear B, it disappeared in -1200 BCE). Anyone with a passing knowledge of the alphabet knows the main and so far only serious theory, is about Phoenician alphabetic script, around -1000 BCE)
It looks like something r/badhistory might be interested in.
