I’m writing my senior thesis on the US assessment on the KMT and Chiang Kai-shek. I have a lot of primary sources from journalists who were with the KMT themselves and I was told there are journalists who were with the PLA. I was told that they were influenced by officials in the PLA and CCP to talk crap on the KMT and why the CCP and PLA were way better. Does anybody know a good book by these journalists?
I don't know if you have come across this book yet, but MacKinnon and Friesen's China Reporting: An Oral History of American Journalism in the 1930s and 1940s is a summary of a conference held in 1982 that brought together foreign journalists in China during the 1930s and 40s. In the conference, they discuss why perceptions of the CCP was more favourable than that of the KMT, and the limitations of their work in China. Most of the journalists thought that they were able to view events rather objectively and that they did a 'darn good job', although even in the conference this conclusion was disputed by some historians, most notably Fairbank, who served with the OWI in China.
