How did Native Americans Deal with snowstorms?

by TheOneOboe

Recently, the Midwest, and more specifically western Michigan had a snowstorm of pretty insane proportions. For a whole week there was almost no visibility outside, temperatures were low enough to cause frostbite in 20 minutes with the ever present icy winds factored in.

Native Americans in the Midwest had to deal with snow all the time of course, but surely snowstorms of the above proportions would have happened to the Native Americans sometimes.

Before any modern technology was brought to the Americas, how would they have dealt with winds and temps so cold they couldn't go outside for more than 20 minutes;how would they get food?. How would their structures have held up against a foot or more of snow. With that much snow and cold would life for Natives nearly shut down until the weather passed?

I'm aware that there are tons of different native groups across the nation that would have lived with and dealt with snow in different ways, so if anyone is an expert on any group at all (not just Midwestern or western Michigan ones) the response would of course still be appreciated.
