Hi all,
I read the rules and want to ensure that this is still appropriate.
I received a document after the passing of my Grandmother.
Can anyone translate this or know what it is? Obviously from Germany 1939, but not sure what it is supposed to identify.
Your help is greatly appreciated!
It is a civilian driving license (Führerschein) issued to certain Mr. Eichmann (full name, along with other personal data should be written on the first page) and allowing him to drive the motor vehicles of class 1, 2 and 3, meaning the motorcycles, regular cars and trucks. In the upper part of the left page you ca see three classes of the machines that could have been covered: combustion engine vehicles (Verbrennungsmaschinen), electric vehicles (Elektromaschinen) and steam vehicles (Dampfmaschinen) with the latter two crossed out. You can see that it was issued in the name of the Police President (highest police authority in the city, roughly equivalent to Chief of Police or Commissioner). I can't read the comment in overwriting the printed text, but this line states that the license is valid only after passing an exam with the place for date of the exam and signature of the official issuing it below, so I assume that exam has been already passed previously in Potsdam in 1920 (makes sense, as Potsdam lies 6 km southwest from Spandau district of Berlin) making this license a duplicate issued for some reason, most likely an expiration or loss or the original.
Military driving licenses usually had the type of vehicles written in hand in a specified field, had the additional line for the unit issuing the document (Verwaltungsbehörde), did not have the Herr/Frau/Fraulein differentiation on account that soldier were almost exclusively men and were identified as military on the cover (Militär-Führerschein or Wehrmacht-Führerschein).
