I'm not sure if this question is better suited for here or the general history subreddit, but I'm looking for recommendations on books and the like about Ancient Greece. I'm currently on the third and final part of Dan Carlin's King of Kings about the Achemanid Persian Empire and that, and too much AC Odyssey has sparked an interest in me about Ancient and Classical Greece.
I'm already a fan of military history and figure Osprey would have some good books on the military aspects, but does anyone have recommendations for the non-military, cultural things?
Most of the following authors have a number of books that would also be of interest to you... I'm being lazy here and just listing off what's closest to hand on my shelves. :)
If you decide to read the ancient authors, be mindful of what translation you pick. There's always going to be an inherent accuracy vs poetics conflict and different translators make different choices which result in works with entirely different tone and feeling. I tend to like Fagles for Homer, but ymmv.
