Music is by its nature an abstract art form, abstract visual art was a comparatively recent development. Abstract painters such as Rothko and Agnes Martin identified their paintings as possessing a musicality associated with there abstract nature. In terms of movements like surrealism, which sought to expose the absurdity of everyday life through radical juxtapositions, the ideology is difficult to apply to music, due to the fact that music possesses little bearing on reality by its very nature, whereas surrealism is rooted in our perception of the world, making it much more of a literary or visual art form.
