Much has been made in popular media about the German protest against the American use of pump action shotguns during WWI. I have two questions:

How effective was the M97 in actual combat?
And how serious did the Germans take their protest? As in was it an attempt at FUD or did they seriously consider the use of shotguns a war crime?
