So, I am not quite sure how phrase this, and I know about the invention of the Julian calendar, and future Gregorian reforms, but I was wondering when western civilization began numbering the years with the AD "age". Obviously people didn't just decide "now it's 0" when Christ was born, so when did they decide to keep track of years in that way? Before that, how did people keep track of years? Did they have their own year counts?
