Found an old postcard (1910's) written in Morse Code. Was this a common thing and why would someone do this?

Basically the title. Was given an old post card album from a family friend and a couple of them appear to be written in Morse Code. Was there any particular reason why someone would do this?

I've just translated it thanks to the charts in Wikipedia. It says, "WILL BEHOME TUESDAY EVENING HOPETO SEEYOU AD". The code is American Morse code, not the current International Morse code. Amongst the differences: in International Morse code, ". ." (dot dot, like the second character of the first line) is always "I", and an "O" character is "- - -" (dash dash dash). In American Morse code, the ". ." is either an "I" or an "O" depending on the amount of space between the dots. That's why ". ." on the first line is the I in WILL and the ". ." with more space is an O in HOME on the second line.
