I specialized in Russian and East European Studied within my History degree and I'd love to take a whack at your question as I hardly ever see questions related to Russia that I feel qualified to tackle. However, I think you need to focus your question. Life in Soviet Russia was quite different in 1925 vs. 1940 vs. 1986. If you clarify a bit I'd be happy to try and write something up for you.
