How Did the SS Fund Themselves in 1930s?

by 31November

Hello all!

I'm reading a book titled The Social History of the Third Reich, 1933 to 1945" by Pierre Ayçoberry, and in it I am in a section about the SS oranization. The book states that the schools planned to produce 500 officers every year in addition to other units, so I'm curious about where the money for all these huge projects came from. Hitler was new as chancellor at this time, so did he have enough power and money to fund basically a second army already?

Good question. Not entirely sure how the SS themselves raised money, but I have a good answer for the how the party themselves did. Basically, I’d argue, it was through lies.

Hitler was obsessed with the idea of a master race. Not just genetically, but technologically. He made sure that every German family had a Volkswagen on their driveway. Nothing special about the car itself, but it was affordable up to the point where every German family could get it. You can find some documents that say something along the lines of, and I don’t quote, “ride in luxury across newly acquired territories!” Hitler said that those who want the car must pay first, and then after they will receive the car. After money was given, little to no cars were given to the populous. All money was used to fund the war, and the small number of cars produced were given to high rank Nazi officials.

In terms of master-race-ness, Hitler also constricted a very sophisticated airport called Tempelhof airport (night not have spelled it right). Just like the people’s car, he also made the people’s plane. Which ultimately met the same fate financial wise.

But to answer your question, I’m sure the SS received money via these ways.
