Why was the colonization of New Zealand so different to the rest of the New World?

by SoybeanCola1933

NZ has a 150 year old treaty signed by both the British and Maori, preserving Maori traditional rights. The treaty and rights persist to this day. Why was this so different from Australia, Canada, US etc.. None of the other colonized countries had any treaty with the local peoples.
