I was looking over this paper and the last page suggests as a plan going forward books might be developed as principle ideological tool to fight socialism.
What books, if any published, from 1952 onward's would have or may have had CIA backing to achieve the goals listed on this last page, did the CIA follow through on these plans to develop strong ideological literature for the public consumption to "Revalidate theoretically the major principles of the free society"?
I would appreciate speculative answers as PM's to further my own research, as hard factual answers may be impossible to source due to the classified nature of such actions.
I don't know about those particular books, but the CIA definitely funded many "ideological" efforts that involved publishing and sponsoring work that they felt would consolidate especially the "anti-Communist left" in many countries. They even sponsored entire organizations (like the Asia Foundation) either as "fronts" or as sympathetic partners in this goal. It is not clear that these efforts were very successful on the whole, it is worth noting.
Audra Wolfe's recent book, Freedom's Laboratory talks about this in the context of science/technology diplomacy. There has also been a lot of work on their influence in the arts and humanities (e.g. through the Congress for Cultural Freedom).
