Looking for Book Recommendations on Berlin circa WWII

by MrTerecs

Hey All, I realize you prefer specific questions so I hope this will be alright. I'm preparing to write a screenplay set in Berlin in 1938/1939 and I want to better understand the rise of the Nazi Party and what the mindset of the average German during this time period would have been. I'm looking for book/documentary recommendations to help me research the following:

  1. How exactly did the Nazi Party rise to power and what were the feelings of Germans at the time? Was it similar to Trump's rise where, although he won, 50% of the country still does not support him?
  2. How much did Germans understand about the Nazi's plans for the Jews and other non desirables?
  3. What was gay culture in Berlin like before the Nazi's came to power? How about during?
  4. The progression of the ghettoization and concentration camps.
  5. The Hierarchy of power within the Nazi Party.

I am, of course, googling and researching at my own public library but I thought I'd also consult you fine folks and see where you pointed me. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated!

One of the best texts on being gay during the Nazi period is Gad Beck's memoir "Underground Life: Memoirs of a Gay Jew in Nazi Berlin" which discusses the intersections of his persecution as a gay Jewish man.
