Was Christopher Columbus a uniquely genocidal Manaic or just a product of his era?

by lostduck86

I am not from America so I have never learnt about him really. Now being a little older, I am little more interested. However, this particular topic seems to be a part of history tied deeply to partisan politics, with one side stating he is a historicaly great man with almost no flaws, and the other crying perfect example of the uniquely brutal western colonialism.

This makes it very difficult to know what to think of the man as I can't tell what is fact and what is politically influenced.

If any Redditors can help in clarifying if he was evil, a product of his time, missrepresented hero, or something else entirely I would greatly appreciate it.
