My grandather has a question for you all. After WW2 and until 89' during Communism , Berlin was split in Capitalist and Communist Berlin. He wants to know how did the Capitalist part of Berlin reach out to other Capitalist countries as they were surrounded by communists. Could they just use a passport to pass the border ?
/u/kieslowski_fan has answered here, in reverse (How did the West reach West Berlin?) and here (from the subreddit FAQ, comparing the postwar occupations of Germany generally) and explains the appeal of living in West Berlin here. /u/Hanrohan and /u/BigBadSaint discuss the 1948 Berlin Blockade and subsequent airlift of supplies in a thread where Hanrohan was gilded (both users provide extensive follow-up, these are also in the FAQ).
