Looking for evidence of a certain medieval infantry tactic I read about years ago

I'm not sure if the source was credible but It stated that infantrymen would pair up in their formations equipped with different weapons. One would wield a greatsword for fencing the enemy and the other would be using something else to kill him once they locked blades.

I think what you might be refering to is the Landsknechte practice of employing Doppelsöldner. A Doppelsöldner (literally "Twice paid") is a volunteer who fights in the first rank of a Landsknecht regiment. This is arguably the most dangerous position and thus better paid than his peers. In a "normal" Landsknecht formation about one man in four was a Doppelsöldner. Now, a Doppelsöldner can either just be a normal Landsknecht who volunteers, at which point he is usually outfitted with some manner of ranged weapon such as a crossbow or an early arquebus (as he is one of few people in a tight formation who has opportunity to use it) or, he can be a Marxbrüder (Technically a Bruder Unserere lieben frawen und der reynen Jungfrawen Marien vnd des Heiligen vnd gewaltsamen Hyemelfursten sanct Marcen).

What the fuck is a Marxbrüder you ask? Well, in 16th century Germany (the Holy Roman Empire) the Brotherhood of St. Mark was an important fencing school that taught, among other things, the use of the Zweihände. In 1487 the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III granted them exclusive rights to the title Master of the Long Swords (Meister des langen Schwerts), effectively granting them a monopoly on the fencing guild market.

So, either a volunteer with a ranged weapon or a swordmaster carrying a Zweihände. This we know with reasonably certainty. Exactly how they used these two handed swords is less certain. Either they were just good swordsmen trained in the art of not getting skewered like Shish kebab when they attacked a formation of pikemen or they were trained to use these swords to destroy the pikes or push them out of the way, effectively allowing for what you inquired about, the second rank to kill the other opposing pikeman.

Sidenote, any Marxbrüder trained in the use of a Zweihände was counted as a Doppelsöldner and paid accordingly wether or no he actually fought in the first rank.
