How Was Science Fiction Published in the USSR?

by Zeuvembie

Were there major magazines and journals, or was it mostly book or magazine publication? Was it mostly locally produced or translated? There's a great deal of information about American and European science fiction produced between 1922 and 1991, but not much about science fiction in the USSR.

Science fiction was typically published in serialized formats in major magazines that aimed to popularize science, and literary magazines. It was also published in book format.

Was it mostly locally produced or translated?

Both.

Soviet science fiction is well-studied. Generally, you can put Russian Wiki through Google Translate and have a decent idea about what was going on. Keep in mind that due to the way the publishing system in USSR functioned, there were a lot less authors in USSR than in USA.
