Holocaust Whataboutism

by ummmbacon

There seems to be a trend these days of other groups showing their history in the Holocaust and how their group was persecuted.

While these events are also horrible and inexcusable it has come to a point where if the Holocaust is brought up it turns into a sort of whataboutism.

Some examples from my life recently, a Jehovah's Witness, trying to come into my house and preach to me, in an attempt at solidarity I assume tells me "Well you know Jehovah's Witnesses were locked up as well", and again this is true some 2,500-5,000 were put in camps died mainly for resisting Nazi authority, and resisting national army service.

A co-worker told me when I mentioned that this day was coming up, that "Catholics were killed too". Again this is true, there was persecution of Catholics and the attempt to eliminate Christianity overall by Hitler.

The large one that gets brought up, especially online, is the persecution of LBTQAI members under the Nazis, and yes again there were some 50,000 overall convicted with 5,000-15,000 of those going into work camps with an unknown number killed.

There are is also the History of the Poles and Slavic Peoples, which others have brought up.

What I would like to know is then, why was it different for the Jews. I know for example that anyone with one Jewish grandparent was taken to the death camps; and the even church registers were looked at for Jews that had converted to Christianity, as the predominant form of Anti-Semitism then was racial against Jews.

But I have a hard time explaining other than those few examples why it was different, or maybe I'm wrong and it wasn't different at all. While I find many items in the FAQ related to the Holocaust I don't see this question addressed specifically.

If I understand you correctly, you're asking why the Holocaust is generally summarised as a genocide of the Jews while the fate of other groups targeted by the Nazis gets comparatively little attention. If that is indeed your question, it is answered here by /u/commiespaceinvader.
