Siege of Jadotville sources

by imuniu21

Hi all,

I am currently doing my leaving cert history project https://ashfieldcollege.ie/wp/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/History.pdf

Since Ireland are famous for having a peacekeeping army, I want to investigate the first time Ireland's army went to war, The Siege of Jadotville, in Congo.

Would there be any good sources I could get in Ireland?

Thanks in advance,

Ian

I think it's slightly misleading to say the Irish Army went to war, as that wasn't their mission in the Congo.

For many years the Siege of Jadotville was largely forgotten, partly because there were no Irish fatalities during the Battle. The event that the public were most familiar with was the Niemba Ambush in 1960 when 9 soldiers were killed.

There are books on the Siege of Jadotville, but perhaps a general book on the Congo crisis might paint a broader picture of the environment in which the Irish Army operated.

Thank you Drop_Short

I recently saw the topic on Netflix, so I wanted to investigate it deeper. I live in Ireland, so it’s well known that Ireland are a peace keeping army, so I wanted to investigate why they were ambushed.

I think the suggestion of getting a source about the general time of Congo would be helpful. Thanks
