'Alexander the Great' by Robin Lane Fox is a great introduction to the life and personality of the titular character. It covers essentially his entire life, and attempts to build up a fairly reasonable picture of who he really was vs. the near mythical figure many historical writers and historians portrayed him to be. He uses a combination of archaeology and psychology to try and sift through many of the potential inaccuracies by Alexander's contemporaries, some of whom may have been more interested in pleasing their leader or omitting embarrassments from their own lives than telling a truly accurate story.

Regarding battles specifically, there are a few chapters each solely dedicated to the major battles him and army fought (eg. Issus, Siege of Tyre, Gaugamela to name a few). These provide a fairly good picture of how the battles likely played out while also conceding that in certain cases there may be significant exaggerations.

The only problem I have with the book is that I found Fox's writing style is a bit different compared to what I'm used to, specifically the way some of his sentences are structured. But that is a negligible point compared to how well-researched and digestible he made the topic of one of history's most legendary figures. I would recommend it.
