Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:
Asking for book recommendations on specific topics or periods of history
Newly published books and articles you're dying to read
Recent book releases, old book reviews, reading recommendations, or just talking about what you're reading now
Historiographical discussions, debates, and disputes
...And so on!
Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.
Hi all, I do have a request for some reading recommendations!
I am looking for any suggestions looking at the more recent scholarship and historiography on the Cold War.
I got interested in it through an undergraduate course after taking a break so any book or article titles would be a great help!
Also anything about underground construction during this period as well. I know its kinda specific so any help would be amazing!
Currently reading on the reformation, although I’m sort of enamored moreso with church politics. Anyone know of good books on church politics near the time of the reformation? Also, Cardinal Ximenez is a fascinating figure, and I’d really like to know more about him.
I'm reading a book called 'First Footsteps', which walks you through the 60,000 year prehistory of Australia's Indigenous people. Starting with their migration from Indonesia, it goes through how they adapted to the environment, how they lived with megafauna and how they dealt with the massive shrinkage of the coastline.
It was first made into a great documentary, but I wanted to be able to reference it easily, so I bought it in book form and am now pouring through the pages noting everything I can use.
Any easy-to-find books or articles about pre-Northern Crusade Baltic history?
Is there a relatively accessible primer on medieval European military tactics?
Thanks!
