Path Between the Seas by David McCullough is a good read, and though I can’t speak to it’s historiography, McCullough is a major American popular historian, so you could google him and probably find a fair bit about his reputation as a historian on Wikipedia and other sources. In fact, there’s likely to be good discussion of that book in particular.

Note: I don’t have any reason to think McCullough did bad history, I just always check credentials, reactions when it comes to popular history. It’s often quite good, but there are exceptions!
