I know a number of people who have a symbol of their profession tattooed on their forearms (chef-knife, priest - cross, fashion designer sewing shears). Are there historical parallels of displaying one's occupation?

Follow up If it's appropriate, I would add that it has carried into modern technology with people getting the symbols of "tools" from graphics programs and lines of code. The expression of identity through body art seems to be most prevalent in creative professions and skilled trades. Was this always a sign of emotionsl dedication to their craft or did it ever serve a more utilitarian purpose?
